Despite a 2:30 start on a sleepy Thursday afternoon, junior Olivia Lo came out firing, scoring 8 points and hitting both of her 3-pointers in the first quarter. The pressure defense also looked good, leading to scores from sophomores Jeanette Grasty and Natalie Anthony and seniors Sabrina Belquist and Sara Chiala. While the full-court defense was effective, the Cats were unable to box out in the half court, allowing the Cougars to get 8 points off of put-backs from offensive rebounds. At the sound of the buzzer, the Cats had a 17 – 12 lead.
The Cat offense stalled in the second, but their defense did not waver, holding the Cougars to 6, while putting up 9. Junior Ashley Poshard, in what would be one theme of the game, got to the hoop on an aggressive drive and put in the score. Belquist added 5 to give the Cats a 26 – 18 lead at the half.
The defense continued to impress in the third, holding the Cougars scoreless until the last two minutes of the frame, when they hit a 3 and two free-throws. Belquist and Poshard contributed all of the scoring for the Cats in the third, combining for 14 points. The Cats cruised to the victory in the fourth, highlighted by a 3-pointer from junior Maddie Dewhirst and a 3-point play from freshman Casey Brennan, who put in the layup through contact after receiving a beautiful pass on the fast break from sophomore Morgan Burt.
The win takes the Cats to 8 – 3 on the season, and they now prepare to host the Vikings of Palo Alto on Tuesday night as league play begins.
